Candida (or Candidiasis) is a term used to describe overgrowth of Candida organisms. Under normal circumstances, these yeast-like organisms are kept under control by 'friendly' bacteria in the intestinal tract. Given the right conditions, Candida organisms are converted from simple yeast to mycelia fungus, usually following a course of antibiotics, the contraceptive pill, pregnancy, high dietary intake of sugar or stress. Any one of these factors can depress the immune system and kill off the friendly bacteria and lead to a whole range of symptoms eg: thrush, fluid retention, muscle aches, frequent infections, depression, chronic aches, allergies. Anti-fungal antibiotics such as Nystatin may be appropriate for severe cases but only as a short-term solution. Diet and Lifestyle A balanced whole food diet is essential. Include garlic, olive oil, fresh vegetables and whole grains. Avoid all sugar, refined foods, alcohol, tea, coffee, smoked/pickled fermented foods, artificial additives and wherever possible. |
