| Atherosclerosis is caused by the accumulation of fats (largely cholesterol) on artery walls. The characteristic symptoms associated with atherosclerosis include high blood pressure, weak pulse, narrowing of the arteries leading to angina, leg cramps and mental deterioration. Prevention through modifications to diet and lifestyle are the only effective treatment. Lifestyle changes should aim to reduce cholesterol levels, and platelet aggregation (the tendency for blood to become sticky leading to insufficient blood flow and blood clots). Consume a diet high in fiber and complex carbohydrates, and low in saturated fats. It is well established that vegetarians have a much lower risk of developing heart disease. Stop smoking. Avoid alcohol and coffee. Avoid stress and introduce aerobic exercise like walking or swimming (but only under doctor's supervision). |
